When he was a boy, Luc's mother would warn him about the mock men living in the trees by their home -- chimpanzees whose cries would fill the night. Luc is older now, his mother gone. He lives in a house of mistreated orphans, barely getting by. Then a man calling himself Prof comes to town with a mysterious mission. When Luc tries to rob him, the man isn't mad. Instead, he offers Luc a job. Together, Luc and Prof head into the rough, dangerous jungle in order to study the elusive chimpanzees. There, Luc finally finds a new family -- and must act when that family comes under attack.

As I've probably told you, I love apes. So I was thrilled when I heard that Eliot Schrefer, whose novel about bonobos, Endangered, was a National Book Award finalist, plans to write three additional books on each of the three additional great apes: chimpanzees, orangutans, and gorillas.

And I'm happy to report that the second book in the series, Threatened (which deals with the bonobo's better-known cousin, the chimpanzee), is a small masterpiece, gorgeously written and profoundly moving.

Like Endangered, Threatened focuses on a young person's relationship with a great ape family--in this case, young Luc's relationship with the chimpanzees of his home country, Gabon. An orphan whose mother and younger sister died of AIDS and whose father abandoned his surviving child, Luc slaves away for a vicious debt collector to pay his mother's medical bill. But then salvation arrives in the form of a mysterious Muslim who calls himself Prof, a researcher intent on becoming Africa's answer to Jane Goodall. Though Luc joins Prof merely to escape his troubles, he forms a stronger connection to the man once they reach the jungles of Gabon and encounter a small and fragile family of chimpanzees. There Luc must decide which bonds to honor: his allegiance to Prof, or his commitment to the non-human subjects of Prof's research.

Threatened is a character-driven novel, with wonderful portraits not only of the frightened Luc and the shady, haunted Prof but of the chimpanzees whom Luc names Drummer and Mango. One of the fascinating aspects of the book is that while Prof tends to romanticize the chimpanzees, seeing them as virtuous alternatives to human depravity, Luc--and through him the author--offers a much more complex, balanced portrayal of creatures that are at once sensitive, caring, violent, and volatile. These chimps are capable of great tenderness, and also of great destruction. In other words, they're pretty much like us--as one would expect of humanity's nearest genetic relative.

The campaign for diversity in YA hasn't touched much (or at all) on inter-species diversity. But maybe it should. After all, non-human animals are among the most under-represented (and poorly represented) of populations in YA literature--and unlike human populations, they have no opportunity to tell their own stories. If the movement for diversity in YA ever does expand beyond human beings, Schrefer's wonderful novels will surely be included on any list of essential reading.

great book, very very realistic
I chose this as a backup for students who had already read Endangered. Recommend for anyone. I used in class.
This book was purchased for a middle school library and the kids love this series!
It was surprisingly good. The relationship that developed with the chimps was intriguing. I would recommend this to anyone who has an interest in animal-human interactions.
This is the second book by Eliot Schrefer that I have read, Both raise awareness regarding animals Endangered and Threatened. Different characters in each book. They are both a little difficult to read because they pull no punches regarding these wonderful animals and their demise in the wild.
This meticulously researched and well-written tale of survival in the jungle of Gabon is gripping and engrossing. Luc, a thirteen-year-old orphan, is freed from his debt to the unscrupulous Monsieur Tatagani by Professor Abdul Mohammed, who plans to study chimpanzees in the wild. The resourceful Luc thrives as the Prof’s assistant, and his first-person narrative is detailed as the two make their primitive home in the jungle along with Omar, a pet monkey.

Tragedy strikes when the Prof disappears under mysterious circumstances, and Luc must survive on his own. He forms a tentative truce with a troop of chimpanzees, and they become his new family. At times they are aggressive, but they have appealing personalities and are as complicated and fascinating as Luc.

Luc’s adventures will appeal to both teens and adults. The novel provokes readers to think about a range of issues, such as the plight of endangered chimpanzees and orphans who have lost their parents to AIDS.

The setting is vividly portrayed, the action is nonstop, and Luc is a captivating character. I enjoyed it as much as the author's earlier novel “Endangered”, which focuses on bonobos in the Congo.
Endangered, Eliot Schrefer’s exciting YA novel about bonobos, is now followed by Threatened, a YA novel about chimpanzees. Like the title Endangered, which refers to the species but also to the protagonist and the young bonobo she is determined to protect, Threatened refers to the state of the species but also to the protagonist, a young teen of Gabon. Luc’s mother taught him to fear the “mock men,” their term for chimpanzees, but his mother and baby sister have died. Orphaned and homeless, with no opportunity to continue his education, Luc is forced to work for a cruel man who gives orphaned boys a bed to sleep in but expects payment in return and cuts off the hands of any boy who can’t pay. Luc’s life changes when he meets the Professor, who is headed into the jungle to study chimpanzees and invites Luc to come with him as his assistant. Luc learns much about the difficulties of surviving in the jungle and about chimpanzees before the Professor’s untimely death leaves him alone with only a group of chimps as “family.” Luc’s struggle to survive and make a life for himself is very different from the struggle faced by Sophie, the heroine of Endangered, but it is every bit as suspenseful and fascinating. Luc must confront his own fears and nightmares and, in coming to understand and accept the chimpanzees, understand and accept himself not as a helpless pawn but as a young man who can control his own destiny.
